Street and Flood Control Superintendent
The City of Lyons Street and Flood Control Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the surface road and bridge network and most flood control structures in the City.
The Department performs regular maintenance on the city's dedicated asphalt, concrete, gravel, and brick streets, as well as the city’s drainage structures, storm channels and ditches. Maintenance includes street sweeping, painting of street markings, cleaning of drainage ways, snow removal, storm cleanup, pothole patching, sign maintenance and blading of streets and alleys.
All told, the Department is responsible for over 36 miles of surfaced roads within the community. Department Staff are also involved in ongoing training programs, as well as keeping abreast of Federal and State regulations and how they affect day-to-day operations.
In addition to duties maintaining the streets and flood control structures, the department helps deliver other important services to the community. Each year the department assists in mosquito control by fogging and placing briquettes in the storm channels. Members of the street department assist in the pick-up and delivery of commodities shipment for Lyons residents. Department staff also keeps the wheels of the City turning; the city’s mechanic is a member of this division. The mechanic repairs and maintains all municipal vehicles and gas powered equipment--from mowers to fire trucks.
